Sharpening: choose your hollow
A sharpen grinds a shallow groove, the hollow, along the bottom of the blade. That leaves two clean edges that grip the ice. The size of the hollow sets the balance between grip and glide.
- Deeper (1/2" or 5/8") bites harder, for sharp turns, quick stops and lighter skaters.
- Shallower (3/4" and up) glides further, for heavier skaters and players who want more speed.
If you're not sure, tell us what you had last time, or start with 1/2".
Profiling: shape the whole blade
Sharpening looks after the edges. Profiling reshapes the blade from heel to toe, which changes where and how much of it touches the ice. Get it right and you'll feel it in your starts, your turns and your top speed.
Most new steel comes with a neutral profile, so a new pair of skates is the best time to choose one. To keep it feeling fresh, Bauer recommends a re-profile three times a season: at the start, around halfway, and before the play-offs.
Player profiles
Zuperior, for agility. Tips you forward onto your toes, for quicker starts and sharper changes of direction.
Ellipse, the all-rounder. Blends the agility of Zuperior with the power of Quad, for smooth transitions and a seamless feel along the whole blade.
Quad, for power. Keeps you centred over the blade, for long, strong strides and the most glide.
Goalie profiles
Goalie SAM (Agility). Quicker footwork, so it's easier to push across and cut off angles.
Goalie Ellipse (Dynamic). Less blade at the toe, for a steadier, more planted stance in the crease.
Which profile suits you?
Think about how you play. If you want to be quicker and more nimble, try Zuperior. If you want more power and speed, try Quad. If you're not sure, Ellipse is a good place to start. Goalies: Goalie SAM for quicker movement across the crease, or Goalie Ellipse for a steadier stance. We set the profile size to match your blade holder. If you'd like a little more agility we can go a size down, or a size up for more stability.

In the shop
Bring your skates into the shop during opening hours. There's no need to book.
Bought new skates online? Try them on at home first, indoors with the blade guards on. Once you're sure of the fit, bring them in and we'll sharpen or profile them.
By post
Can't get to the shop? A sharpen is £7. A profile is £30, with a sharpen to your chosen hollow included. Return postage is our normal delivery charge, free on orders over £100.
